Cellulose acetate

is a non-petroleum based biopolymer that is made from natural cotton and wood fibers. It is hypoallergenic material, made from a renewable resource, lightweight, and very strong.

Regular plastic is petroleum-based nylon pellets which are melted down. Plastic is cheap, easy to produce and harmful for the environment.

Cellulose acetate was first used for eyewear in the late 1940’s because of brittleness and other problems with previously used plastics. Today’s acetates are known for being durable, lightweight, and flexible. Cellulose acetate also has the widest range for transparency, rich colors, and finishes.

The in-depth manufacturing process is responsible for many of the unique qualities that set acetate apart from other plastics. To start manufacturing acetate, clear sheets of acetate are mixed with acetone and organic dyes to create brilliant colors and patterns. Once mixed, the dyed acetate is pressed by large rollers and cut into small pieces for further processing. It is then pressed a second time with other completed colors to produce the final raw sheets or blocks of acetate used in other products manufacturing.
